Oreo is a bit overweight! Wilbur...not so bad
Oreo and Wilbur were looking for a safe, permanent home when they were adopted thru a parrot rescue in 2004. Oreo is a retired brood sow and Wilbur is one of her babies. They originally came from a breeder who promoted dog food as appropriate food for a pig (NOT!!) and who removed the babies from the mothers at about two weeks old and fed them dog food and cows' milk to "keep them small" (DOESN"T!!!).
I don't know how many times they'd been rehomed by the time I met them, but I was happy to be able to place them in what seemed to be a permanent home when they were removed from the parrot rescue. But, sadly, as happens so many times, they had to be relocated again. Their living area was going to house market pigs being raised for slaughter. On May 17, 2008, they came to Camp Skipping Pig in a rush when I recieved a call that they had to be out IMMEDIATELY (within an hour) because the new pigs were being held on a trailer and waiting to be moved in. If I didn't pick them up within an hour, the people would "get rid of them"...likely meaning they'd be killed because there's simply nowhere to "get rid of" pet pigs that quickly. Within a two hour span they were loaded, hauled, and settled into new quarters here. Oreo was a charm to load...Wilbur likes to sit when asked to move somewhere other than where he's standing. He took a little physical effort!
Oreo is quite aged. We're guessing that she was about 11 in 2004. Except for being a bit overweight, her health is excellent. She's gentle but shy and doesn't like to be touched, although she'll stand close by.
Wilbur was about 5 in 2004. He's very friendly and loves belly rubs. They're both adjusting very well in their new accommodations, but we hope to find these two sweet pigs a loving and permanent home where they can live out their lives in peace, together, with no more disruptions.
"Lil Willie" came from the parrot rescue at about the same time as Oreo and Wilbur. All three came from the same breeder. Read Willie's story, too!
